Lectures (Approximately 1 hour)

Borders, Sashings & Labels:

Several borders and sashings are discussed; at least a dozen quilts are displayed. Handouts are provided. Emphasis is given in the following areas:
  • Fabric choices that help create the illusion of the pieced borders floating over the background
  • Simple math formula for adding a pieced border to any size top
  • Adding the borders so that the quilt lays perfectly flat
  • Attaching the binding
  • Labeling the quilt.

Simple Blocks = Stunning Quilts:

A dozen or more quilts will be shown where simple blocks have been used to create beautiful quilts, many of which have won awards at national quilt shows. All examples shown will be quilts that can be made by a confident beginner! Emphasis is given to the following areas:
  • Extending sashing into the border so as to create a more completed appearance
  • Design choices so that the edges of the blocks are disguised and it is difficult to see where one block ends and another block begins
  • Portions of blocks can be colored differently from other portions of the same block
  • Border choices that will enhance your quilt.

Demystify "Quilt as Desired":

Most quilters cringe at the words "Quilt as Desired" in a pattern. As a longarm quilter for over ten years, I've had to make hundreds, probably thousands, of decisions regarding what type quilting to put in portions of quilts. Participants are encouraged to bring tops for class discussion. Emphasis is given in the following areas:
  • Choosing the design
  • Scaling/editing the design to fit your quilt
  • Marking the design
  • Thread choices for various designs
